What is the Thyroid?

Despite its relatively small size, averaging a mere 4 cm in height and 18g in weight, the thyroid gland has a huge impact on our overall health. A butterfly shaped gland located just below the Adam’s apple, the thyroid impacts the skeleton, heart, and the metabolic machinery of every cell in the body. It is the spark plug that runs your body! Your body has mechanisms in place to maintain a delicate balance of thyroid hormone so that it neither fluctuates too high or too low, leading to hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism respectively.

Symptoms of Thyroid Disorder:

As in autoimmunity, symptoms of thyroid disorder may be vague and go unnoticed for many years by both client and doctor. Here is a list of the most common hypothyroid signs:
*Tired /Sluggish
*Cold hands and feet
*Require excessive sleep to function properly
*Increase in weight, even with a low-calorie diet
*Gain weight easily
*Difficult, infrequent bowel movements
*Depression/Lack of Motivation
*Morning headaches that wear off as the day progresses
*Dryness of the skin and/or scalp
*Mental fog/sluggishness

Without listing, imagine the symptoms of hyperthyroid to be the mirror image to the above. In the hyperthyroid client, all systems tend to speed up and produce more heat and anxiety.

Medical management vs. Functional model?

As in the case of autoimmunity (or any other condition we may list), the medical model often fails to properly assist the thyroid client. This is the case for 3 main reasons:
1: The main laboratory marker of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is often an insufficient assessment of thyroid physiology in total. The idea that thyroid hormone may be low, suggesting a need for more thyroid hormone by way of pharmaceutical intervention, is myopic in nature. It fails to address the complexity of the entire pathway of thyroid metabolism and what support is needed. At times this strategy works for a period of time. Often it entirely misses the mark leading to further client and practitioner frustration.
2: The vague nature of the symptomatic picture can often lead to a misdiagnose, or lack of diagnose for many years.
3: The medical model fails entirely to understand that a great majority of hypothyroid clients have autoimmune thyroid, or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, that needs an intervention all its own.

On the other hand, the functional model at RNH of the management of the thyroid client is again to recognize unhealthy shifts or tendencies in thyroid metabolism. A much more comprehensive blood panel is often needed to assess all aspects of thyroid physiology, as well as the presence of thyroid autoimmunity. The results allow us to intervene through appropriate diet, supplementation, and lifestyle, in order to establish a more normal physiology and function. This focus on cause and natural remedy can have a more permanent and dramatic result for the thyroid client.

This pattern of thought is true for nearly any condition we may list. It is the attention to causation, the recognition of unhealthy shifts or tendencies, and the use of natural solutions to restore a healthy balance and function to the body, that make the functional model for health so profound!
